Significance
Vishnu is worshipped here as Ranganatha, reclining on the serpent Adishesha — the first and greatest of the Divya Desams sung by the Alvar saints.
The temple is a vast city of seven prakarams (enclosures) and many gopurams, including the soaring Rajagopuram; it is the heart of Srivaishnavism, closely associated with the philosopher Ramanuja, and its Vaikuntha Ekadashi draws immense crowds.
History
An ancient temple celebrated by the Alvar saints and expanded by successive South Indian dynasties over many centuries; its Rajagopuram is among the tallest temple towers in the world.
