Significance
As a Shakti Peetha, Kalighat marks a place where, in the story of Sati's death and Shiva's grief, a part of her body is said to have fallen; the Goddess is worshipped here as Kali in a distinctive dark-stone form.
One of the most thronged shrines in Bengal, it has drawn pilgrims for centuries, and the name 'Calcutta' / Kolkata is often traced to Kalighat.
History
The present temple dates to the early 19th century, though worship at the site is far older. As a Shakti Peetha, it has long been a major centre of Goddess worship.
