Significance
Shiva is worshipped here as Harihara, half Shiva and half Vishnu, the Swayambhu lingam bathed in water and bilva, beneath a towering deul (spire) that dominates the old city.
It is the grandest of Bhubaneswar's many temples and a high point of the Kalinga style, drawing great crowds at Maha Shivaratri.
History
Largely built in the 11th century in the Kalinga style, Lingaraj is the culmination of Bhubaneswar's temple-building tradition and remains in active worship.
