Significance
Kashi Vishwanath is the presiding shrine of Varanasi, the city Hindus hold to be among the oldest living cities and one of the holiest of all pilgrimage places. Shiva is worshipped here as Vishwanath, the Lord of the Universe.
As a Jyotirlinga, it is one of the twelve shrines where Shiva is revered as a lingam of light. Devotion here is bound to the Ganga and to the belief that Kashi is a place of liberation (moksha).
History
The temple has stood, been destroyed, and been rebuilt across many centuries; the present structure on the site dates to the 18th century, built by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, with later additions.

In the old city of Varanasi, near the Ganga ghats. Varanasi is served by its own airport and a major railway station.
