Significance
Vishnu is worshipped here as Badrinarayan, in a Himalayan setting on the Alaknanda river. Badrinath is one of the four Char Dham of India.
It is also part of Uttarakhand's Chota Char Dham circuit and, like Kedarnath, opens only for the warmer half of the year.
History
Tradition credits Adi Shankara with re-establishing the shrine in the 8th century. The temple has been maintained and rebuilt over the centuries in its high Himalayan setting.
How to reach
In the town of Badrinath on the Alaknanda river, Uttarakhand, reached by road via Joshimath; open roughly late spring to autumn. Nearest hubs are Rishikesh and Dehradun.
