Significance
The presiding deity is Meenakshi, a form of Parvati, worshipped with her consort Sundareswarar, a form of Shiva — an unusual temple where the Goddess takes precedence.
The vast complex is celebrated for its many gopurams (gateway towers) covered in thousands of brightly painted sculptures, and for the annual Meenakshi Thirukalyanam (celestial wedding) festival.
History
A temple of great antiquity in the ancient city of Madurai, the present grand complex was largely built and expanded under the Nayak rulers between the 16th and 17th centuries.
