Significance
Vishnu is worshipped here as Venkateswara, also called Balaji or Srinivasa, on the seven hills of Tirumala. It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites on earth.
Devotees traditionally offer tonsure (their hair) and receive the celebrated Tirupati laddu as prasad. The temple is administered by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
History
An ancient hill shrine patronised across dynasties — the Pallavas, Cholas, and Vijayanagara rulers among them — Tirumala has been a major centre of Vaishnava devotion for well over a thousand years.
