Significance
At Mahakaleshwar, Shiva is revered as Mahakal — the lord of time (kaal) — presiding over the ancient city of Ujjain on the Kshipra river.
The temple is renowned for the Bhasma Aarti, an early-morning ritual unique to Mahakal, and Ujjain is one of the four cities that host the Kumbh Mela (as Simhastha).
History
Ujjain has been a centre of worship and learning since antiquity. The Mahakaleshwar shrine has ancient roots; the present temple structure was rebuilt in the 18th century.
