The story of Hanuman Jayanti

Hanuman — son of the wind-god Vayu and Anjana, and held in many traditions to carry a spark of Shiva — was born to serve Rama. He is the perfect bhakta: boundless in strength yet utterly humble, his power always placed at the feet of the Lord he loves.

The Ramayana remembers his leap across the ocean to Lanka, his finding of Sita, and his carrying of the whole Sanjivani mountain to save Lakshmana. For this he is worshipped as the remover of fear and the giver of strength, and the Hanuman Chalisa is sung in his name across India.

How is Hanuman Jayanti celebrated?

Devotees visit Hanuman temples at dawn, recite the Hanuman Chalisa and the Sundara Kanda, offer sindoor, a sacred thread, and boondi or laddu, and keep a fast. Many turn to the day for courage, protection, and freedom from fear.

A mantra to mark the day

ॐ हनुमते नमः

oṃ hanumate namaḥ

I bow to Hanuman, courage and devotion embodied.
