The story of Anant Chaturdashi
Ananta — 'the endless' — is Vishnu as the infinite, resting on the thousand-hooded serpent Shesha upon the ocean of eternity. On this day devotees worship him and tie the Anant sutra, a thread of fourteen knots; the Mahabharata tells that Krishna gave this vow to Yudhishthira to restore the Pandavas' fortunes.
The same day brings the close of Ganeshotsav. After ten days in homes and pandals, Ganesha is carried in joyous procession to the water and immersed, with the cry 'Ganpati Bappa Morya, pudhchya varshi lavkar ya' — come again soon next year.
How is Anant Chaturdashi celebrated?
Devotees keep the Anant vrat, worship Vishnu, and tie the fourteen-knotted Anant thread on the wrist. In Maharashtra and beyond, the day closes Ganeshotsav with grand Ganesh Visarjan processions and immersion.
A mantra to mark the day
ॐ नमो नारायणाय
oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya
