Smarta observers keep the Ekadashi by the sunrise rule; Vaishnavas following the arunodaya window may observe the Dwadashi. Tulsi Vivah — the ceremonial marriage of Tulsi to Shaligram (Vishnu) — is performed on this day or the following Dwadashi, and reopens the Hindu wedding season.

The story of Dev Uthani Ekadashi

For the four monsoon months of Chaturmas, tradition holds that Vishnu rests in cosmic sleep upon the serpent Shesha on the ocean of milk. Dev Uthani Ekadashi — 'the Ekadashi of the god's awakening' — is the day he rises, and the auspicious time for new beginnings returns with him.

On this day Tulsi, the sacred basil revered as a form of the Goddess, is ceremonially married to Shaligram, the stone that embodies Vishnu. The rite blesses the household and formally opens the wedding season that the four months of Chaturmas had paused. Devotees keep the Ekadashi fast, light lamps, and worship Vishnu by the name Narayana.

How is Dev Uthani Ekadashi celebrated?

Devotees keep the Ekadashi fast and worship Vishnu, waking him with bells, lamps, and the chant of his names. In homes and temples the Tulsi plant is dressed as a bride and married to Shaligram or an image of Krishna, with lamps, sugarcane, and offerings — a joyful rite that reopens the season of weddings.

A mantra to mark the day

ॐ नमो नारायणाय

oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya

I bow to Narayana (Vishnu), the refuge and resting place of all beings.
