Shani is the son of Surya and the slow-moving planet Saturn, the great karmic accountant who ensures that every action meets its just result. His gaze is said to be hard, but its purpose is corrective, not cruel.
His difficult periods — Sade Sati and dhaiya — are traditionally times of testing and maturing. Devotees approach him with humility and honesty; Hanuman is said to shield the faithful from his harsher effects, so many honour both on Saturdays.
