The mantra
ॐ नमो नारायणाय
oṃ namo nārāyaṇāya
I bow to Narayana (Vishnu), the refuge and resting place of all beings.
In depth
Narayana is a name of Vishnu — 'the one whose abode is the waters' — the sustainer who holds the universe in being. The eight-syllable mantra (ashtakshara) Om Namo Narayanaya is among the most revered invocations of Vishnu.
It is chanted for peace, for refuge in difficulty, and as a practice of surrender to the divine will. Thursday, Vishnu's day, is traditionally favoured, but like any mantra its real power is a calm, sincere heart returning to it again and again.
