bhakti — loving devotion to the Divine

In short

Bhakti is loving devotion to the Divine — a personal, heartfelt relationship with God through love, trust, and surrender. One of the principal paths to liberation, it is open to all regardless of background, and finds expression in prayer, chanting, song, and remembrance of the Divine name.

What it means

Bhakti is the path of the heart. Where the path of knowledge (jnana) reasons toward the Absolute and the path of action (karma yoga) serves without attachment, bhakti loves — it turns to a personal form of the Divine with trust and longing, and makes that love itself the way home.

The great bhakti movements opened spiritual life to everyone, across every community, through simple practices anyone could take up: singing the Divine name (kirtan), remembrance (japa), and heartfelt prayer. Hanuman's devotion to Rama is held up as its very image — strength and selfhood placed entirely in loving service — and the Gita assures the devoted that the Divine looks after whatever they lack.

A verse on Bhakti

“ananyāś cintayanto māṁ ye janāḥ paryupāsate”

Bhagavad Gita 9.22 · Chapter 9, Raja-Vidya-Raja-Guhya Yoga

To those who think of Me with undivided heart, I carry what they lack and preserve what they have.

Spoken by Krishna to the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra — the Gita sits within the Mahabharata's Bhishma Parva — as Arjuna, overcome with grief and unwilling to fight his own kin, laid down his bow before the war.
