Answered from scripture
How do I control anger, according to the Bhagavad Gita?
In short
The Bhagavad Gita traces anger back to its root. In verses 2.62–2.63, Krishna describes the chain: dwelling on an object breeds craving, craving breeds anger when thwarted, and anger clouds judgment until reason is lost. Catch it early — at the dwelling, before it becomes craving — and the whole chain never forms.

Spoken by Krishna to the warrior Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra — the Gita sits within the Mahabharata's Bhishma Parva — as Arjuna, overcome with grief and unwilling to fight his own kin, laid down his bow before the war.
In depth
The Gita's insight is that anger is not the first link — it is the fourth or fifth. It begins quietly, with the mind circling an object of desire. From that dwelling comes attachment, from attachment craving, and when craving is blocked, it flares into anger.
This is why willpower against anger in the moment so often fails: by then the chain is nearly complete. The practical teaching is to notice the earlier links — the fixation, the craving — where they are still small and easy to release. Awareness upstream is worth more than restraint downstream.
Related questions
What does the Gita say is the cause of anger?
Unfulfilled craving. Bhagavad Gita 2.62–2.63 describes anger arising when desire — itself born from dwelling on an object — is thwarted.
How does the Gita say to stop anger?
By interrupting the chain early, at the stage of dwelling and craving, before it hardens into anger — because once anger arises it clouds judgment and memory.
